What we measure and how
This page is the rule. Everything labelled a reading on this site is produced by the procedure below, the same way for every coin and every day, from daily closing prices.
What is measured

What a reading is not
A reading describes where a price has been, not where it is going. «Near its monthly high» means the last close sat in the top 20% of the range covered by the previous 30 days — that is a statement about the past, and it can be checked against the numbers on the same page. Nothing here forecasts the next move, because daily closes do not contain that information and saying otherwise would be a guess dressed as a method.
Why the thresholds are published
A rule that is not written down can be adjusted after the fact to make old readings look better. These numbers are in the open so that cannot happen quietly: if we ever change them, the change is visible here and the readings published under the old rule stay on the record.
The record
Every reading is kept with its date and the price move that followed, including the ones that aged badly. We started keeping it on the day the site was built, so the record is short before it is long — that is stated on the page rather than hidden by leaving the page out.
